Trailering: Your ticket to new boating adventures
If you’ve ever wished you could take your boat to new and exciting waters without being tied to just one marina, trailering can help. Whether you dream of exploring hidden lakes or setting sail on a new coastline, a little planning and preparation can make trailering your boat a smooth and stress-free experience.
Step 1: Know your equipment
Before you hit the road, make sure your trailer, hitch, and tow vehicle are properly matched to your boat’s size and weight. Don’t forget—your boat’s total weight includes not just the hull, but also the fuel, engine, and all your gear. A miscalculated load could lead to serious towing issues, so it’s always better to double-check your numbers.
Step 2: The pre-departure checklist
Think of this as your pre-flight routine before takeoff. A few key things to inspect before heading out:
- Wheel bearings and tire pressure
- Load distribution and tongue weight
- Safety chains and lights
- Tie-downs and straps
If you’re new to trailering, spend some time in an open parking lot practicing turning, braking, and—perhaps the trickiest of all—backing up. This will make launching at the ramp much less stressful.
Step 3: Hitting the road
Once on the road, stop every hour or so to check your tie-downs, safety chains, and any loose gear. A quick check on the wheel hubs is also a smart move; if they feel unusually hot, you might have a wheel bearing issue that needs attention. A well-maintained trailer means a worry-free trip.
Step 4: Mastering the boat ramp
Boat ramps can feel intimidating, especially if there’s an audience watching (and there usually is!). Reduce stress by completing all your final prep away from the actual ramp. Remove tie-downs, attach dock lines, and make sure the drain plug is in. Then, when it’s your turn, line up your trailer straight, back down slowly, and launch your boat with confidence.
Once your boat is floating free, take a moment to ensure the engine is running smoothly before heading out. And just like that—you’re ready to explore!
